CLUB
OVERVIEW
VC Godalming + Haslemere was created from the members and assets of
Rother Valley CC and VC Godalming 3 May 2007. Unlike some more
commercial clubs, it is a club run and directly controlled by local
cyclists for ALL cyclists in Godalming, Haslemere & the surrounding
area.
Every Sunday morning we meet for a ride at 08:45 for 09:00 departure. Both
Road and Mountain Biking rides are organised for every Sunday. Rides are
posted on the website and registered users will receive
an email containing the ride details. It is free to register on the website. As well as weekly club rides, we have riders entered for numerous events, both national and
international and have both a road racing and mountain bike team in action.
Other events are frequent
and posted in the
Calendar
. These range from social nights out to Velodrome taster sessions,
to rambling mountain-bike rides & regular training sessions. We even organise
training holidays in hot climates!
Most rides start and finish at
the Care for Health Clubhouse next to Godalming train station or at
Haslemere train station. Rides
will vary but will normally take in some nice climbs, descents, views
and even the occasional café or pub! Check out the information posted
in the ride details to select a ride type suitable for you.

TransRockies Mountain Bike Race 2008

In August
VCGH member Grant Stretch is off to Calgary in Canada to ride in the annual
TransRockies Mountain Bike Race. This race covers about 600km with roughly
11,000 metres of climbing through the Rockies and has been described as an
Ultra Endurance race. The race is over seven days with one stage each day
starting at 8.00 a.m. with the riders expected to finish by 6.00 pm. In 2007
the stages were split up as follows:
Stage one 21 miles/3900 feet climbing
Stage two 38 miles/3900 feet climbing
Stage three 58 miles/4500 feet climbing
Stage four 72 miles/4026 feet climbing
Stage five 58 miles/4500 feet climbing
Stage six 73miles/6900 feet climbing
Stage seven 30 miles/2000 feet climbing (this has been extended by 35km for
2008)
Grant decided to do the TransRockies as a personal challenge but as part of
the challenge he would like to raise some money for Woodlarks Campsite trust
in Farnham.
The Charity:-
Woodlarks is a unique charity that was set up roughly 70 years ago in
Farnham to help disabled children. It is based on land that was donated for
this very purpose and is run entirely by volunteers who give a lot of time
and energy for free.
What it gives to the severely, and less severely, handicapped children who
go to the camps is a feeling of comradeship, the freedom of camping and the
feeling of self worth that comes from sleeping under canvas in a friendly
and safe environment.
As the camps are usually a week long it also gives the parents/carers an
invaluable break and a chance to re-charge their batteries.
Why is Grant involved:-
As a boy he was in the cubs and scouts which is how he got involved in
Woodlarks. He used to go to the camps as a helper doing what jobs he could
(he was only 11 when he first went), pushing wheelchairs and generally
helping the other kids. As his Mum encouraged him to go he suspects she also
wanted a much needed a break ??
If you can imagine the sense of achievement and self worth ‘camping out’ in
a safe environment gives these kids that will give you an idea of what is
added to the lives of the kids and carers, it is what Woodlarks is all
about.
Why raise money:-
The camp has been running for 70 years and over that time the buildings have
been developed and maintained but they have reached the end of what that
development can offer so a re-build is needed. Woodlarks are well on the way
to their target but need any help they can get so he would like to help in
what small way he can. If you want to see just how much of a
challenge the TransRockies is or you would like to know more about Woodlarks
Campsite web links are opposite as well as a link for charity choice that
will allow you to make a donation.

Bikeability is launched in South West Surrey

An exciting new business has recently been established in Surrey providing cycle training for adults and children. Forget old-style cycling proficiency tests, this is cycle training for the 21st century, catering for people of all ages and abilities, from those who have never learned to ride a bike at all to experienced cyclists who want to gain more confidence and cycle safely on today’s busy roads: many cyclists have never received any kind of formal training or were taught to ride years ago and need to have their skills updated to take account of modern conditions.
Julie Rand is a VCGH member, Godalming resident and fully accredited CTC cycle instructor, as well as a mother of two schoolchildren, and cycles regularly in the local area both on and offroad. She delivers a cycle training scheme known as Bikeability which complies with the new National Standards in cycle training and is approved by CTC - the UK’s national cyclists’ organisation, the Department for Transport and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, amongst other bodies.
Courses are tailored to individual requirements or can be given in small groups.
For complete beginners, novices and younger children, the training takes place away from traffic in an off road environment but once Level 1 basic skills are achieved, training moves on road to quiet locations, allowing trainees to develop their confidence in dealing with traffic at Level 2. At Level 3, trainees are exposed to more complicated situations such as roundabouts and junctions but are taught the skills necessary to handle the conditions safely. There are no pass/fail tests at the end of the course and trainees can progress at their own pace without the fear of failure.
Recent trainees have included local schools, St John’s Ambulance personnel and Police Commnity Support Officers amongst others and the feedback received has been overwhelmingly positive.
For more details and a free taster session, please contact Julie Rand on 01483 422119 or email julie.rand@yahoo.com or see www.ctc.org.uk/cycletraining, http://www.bikeability.org.uk/
